Donald Charles Figgins

Donald Charles "Don" Figgins, 86, formerly of Meriden, Kansas died May 3, 2024 at home in Topeka of acute myeloid leukemia.

He was born April 26, 1938 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Jesse Lois "Pat" Figgins and Edna Esther (Root) Smith. Don spent his youngest years in Topeka before moving with his family to Holton, Kansas in 1948. He graduated from Holton High School in 1957 then moved back to Topeka. He joined the Naval Reserve serving on active duty from 1962-1964, performing combat intelligence and radar operator work. He was present at the Cuban missile crisis. He served on the following ships, USS Valley Forge, USS Belle Grove and USS Point Defiance.

Don married Judith Ann "Judy" Brackett on September 9, 1966 at the home of Judy's mother in Topeka, who performed the ceremony. They divorced in 1983. Don and Judy were blessed with two children: a son, Donald Dean and a daughter, Suzette Lynn. Don then married Mary Beth Dunhaupt on December 29, 1988 at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Topeka. In 2013 Don was blessed to connect with a daughter, Linda Sue, of which he was previously unaware.

Don worked with disabled children and adults over the course of his life, at Kansas Neurological Institute (KNI), TARC, Inc., Sheltered Living, Inc. and the Jackson County Training Center. He and Judy also owned and operated Mom's Apple Pie restaurant near Forbes Air Force Base. However, Don is best known for his cabinet making career in Holton and Topeka. A profession he excelled at until the age of 85!

Survivors include his wife, Mary Beth (Dunhaupt) Figgins of Topeka; his daughter Suzette (Figgins) Holston and her partner Mike Jones of Phoenix, AZ; Suzette's mother Judy Cole (Judy Baker) of Springfield, IL; his daughter Linda (Stevens) Scott (David "Scotty") of Corpus Christi, TX; his grandchildren from Suzette and her ex-husband, Brett Holston: Sam Holston and his partner Morgan Simmonds of Topeka and Jacob Holston (Shania) of Netawaka, Kansas; grandchildren from Linda and her ex-husband: Anna (Capeheart) Marin and her partner (Shon Brown) of Driscoll, TX and Edward Capeheart and his partner Amanda Slaughter of Floresville, TX; also by numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Jerald Irving "Jerry" Figgins, Lauren Blaine "Larry" Figgins and Terrence Figgins; his adopted sisters, Patricia Ann (Figgins) Thomas, Mary Lou (Figgins) Doty and Jeanne Marie (Figgins) Armstrong; and his son Donald Dean Figgins.

Don chose cremation. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday May 11, 2024 at Hoyt United Methodist Church, 405 Highland Ave, Hoyt, KS. A memorial headstone will be placed in Rochester Cemetery in Topeka.
