Donald J. Kamphaus, Jr

Donald Joseph (DJ) Kamphaus, Jr. 69, died March 7 at his home in Topeka.
He was born to Donald and Mary Ellen (Berggren) Kamphaus on January 9, 1944. As a boy he enjoyed hunting with his father and brother. He attended Saint Xavier Catholic School in Junction City, graduating in 1962. During the school year he could be seen playing football, basketball and participating in track. He enjoyed sports during the summer and played baseball in the city leagues.
After graduation Don attended Emporia State Teacher College. He began working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Topeka in December of 1964, retiring after 39 years in 2004. Don was an active member of The United Rubber Workers. He enjoyed playing golf and took part in many golf tournaments.
Don married Penelope (Penny) Reames on December 2, 1967, they later divorced. They enjoyed raising dogs, specifically Labrador Retrievers and taking them to shows.
He became an avid enthusiast of model airplane flying. His hobby was building and putting together new planes. He attended many shows and fly-ins across the country. He was a member of several organizations pertaining to flying including the International Miniature Aircraft Association and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
Don was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother Raymond Kamphaus and wife Susan of Junction City; nieces, Jessica and husband Jeff Ruble, Erica Kamphaus and Vanessa Kamphaus; two great nieces Arianna and Stella; and one great nephew, Gavin.
A private graveside will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center at a later date.
