Donald L. Gentry passed away on August 18, 2011 at Presbyterian Manor. He was born in Grenada, Kansas on May 12, 1924. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Alice (Crosby) Gentry, two brothers and two sisters.
He met his wife Ethel (Wade) at a dance and they were married two weeks later in 1944. Don was 20 and Ethel was 16. After service in the U.S. Army, Don was a truck driver. Most of his career, he drove mainly for Whelan's Lumber Co. and Hill's Pet Nutrition. In 1985, Don was awarded Kansas Driver of the Year. He drove over 2 million miles without an accident. He liked to fish, play cards, read and watch John Wayne movies. He "never knew a stranger" and was kind to everyone.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ethel Gentry, daughter Connie (Tom) Foltz, brother Jerry (Helga) Gentry and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation will follow the visitation to be held at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 SW 6th Ave. on Monday, Aug. 22 from 5-7PM. A private inurnment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date.
