Donald Piland

December 7, 1951 — March 20, 2025

Topeka

In loving memory of Mike “Papa” Piland, who left this world on March 20, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the grand age of 73. Known for his unyielding spirit and zest for life, Mike was a cornerstone of joy, laughter, and love—not just to his family, but to everyone he met in his adventurous journey.

Born on December 7, 1951, in Enid, Oklahoma, Mike was the ultimate family man. A delivery truck driver by trade, he spent years on the road with Consolidated Freightways in Chicago, Builders Concrete in Newton, Kansas, and Kan Build in Osage City, Kansas. But make no mistake; it wasn't just building materials he delivered—he delivered smiles!  He truly enjoyed meeting people and sharing a laugh or two.

Mike was a proud Vietnam Veteran, having served in the United States Army. His dedication to his country was as deep as the love he had for his family. Anyone who crossed paths with him knew he was always willing to lend a helping hand, either with a joke to lighten the mood or by being the first one to volunteer when someone was in need.

Now, let’s talk dessert—because Mike was not only known for his kind heart but also for his culinary talent! His famous cheesecake was practically a legend, he teamed up with his daughter, Misty, to create Grandpa Jerry’s Drunkin Cherry Pie winning a prize. There were always cheers ringing out at school events for Misty he proudly stood by, rooting her on like the supportive dad he always was.

As a proud graduate of Chapman High School, he put his heart into everything he did, from being part of the high school band to tackling opponents on the football field. He enjoyed the outdoors immensely, preferring the serenity of fishing and camping at Melvern Lake or Marion Reservoir over the adrenaline rush of hunting. A true lover of nature, he’d often found joy in simply feeding the deer. He did his own butchering with his family coming home to deer soaking in pots of milk in the fridge. He always gave everyone a good laugh.

His legacy lives on through his beloved wife of 38 years, Peggy Piland, and their children, Misty (Brett) Cole and Sara L. Essman. Mike’s pride and joy were his grandchildren: Max, Gabe, Emmett, and Amelia (AKA Bestie) Everett, as well as his great-granddaughters, Joey and Stevie. His laughter and love will forever resonate in their hearts.

Mike is also survived by his brother, Jim Piland as well as his extended family. Preceded in death by his siblings Sylvia, Billy, Aida, Hubert II, John, and Grace, and his parents Hubert and Elizabeth.

To Mike “Papa” Piland: A jokester, a helper, a family first kind of guy, and perhaps most importantly, an extraordinary human being who filled our lives with love, laughter, and quite a lot of delicious desserts! Until we meet again, Papa, keep the jokes coming and save us a piece of cheesecake!
