Donald R. Shrewsbury

August 7, 1936 — November 18, 2020

Donald R. "Don" Shrewsbury - a quiet humble man who asked nothing for himself but gave of himself freely to all - died Wednesday, November 18, 2020 in Topeka with his family near. He was 84.

Don was born August 7, 1936 in Dott, West Virginia to Paris Birl Shrewsbury and Bessie Ola Lusk Shrewsbury. They often claimed he was the perfect child. Later in life it was said that Don never had to apologize for anything as he never did anything wrong.

Don worked at Santa Fe Railroad, later BNSF for 38 years. He was a devoted husband and father whose greatest pleasure in life was spending time with his family, especially if it was outdoors. He enjoyed taking his family on vacations, camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing. Always taking time to teach each of us what he knew about the outdoors and how to appreciate the simple things in life. He did not stop there as he also taught each of us to think of the family first and not ourselves. Finally, he instilled a work ethic in every one of his children. There were always chores to be done before the family adventures could happen.

Don was also known for always helping out. It did not matter if it was the church, a relative, a neighbor or farmer he knew. He was always there to help them build, repair or remodel. This was especially true for his children. He was always the first one there and the last one to leave when they needed help. He could out work anyone half his age.

He came to Topeka in 1955 with the Air Force and was stationed at Forbes Field. This is where he met the love of his life, Peggy Ann Clifton. They were married for 63 years. She survives. They have four children, Donald R. Shrewsbury, Jr and Cathy of Tecumseh, Darrell J. Shrewsbury and Cindy of Meriden, James D. Shrewsbury and Nancy of Auburn and Vicki Lynn Gregory and Doug of Topeka. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way. He loved playing with all of them. His two sisters survive Margaret Cantrell of Virginia and Glenda McLeod of South Carolina.

Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, restrictions kept the family away from Don the last 8 months of his life. In lieu of flowers, cards, or donations, our family prefers that you take time to hug your family as we wished we could have hugged him.

Cremation has taken place and private inurnment will take place in Rochester Cemetery at a later date.

Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. is assisting the family.
