Donald Albert Smith, Jr., 83, of Topeka, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 27, 2019. He was born January 29, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Donald Albert and Edith (Cabbell) Smith, Sr.
As a youngster, the Smith family moved to Topeka. He attended kindergarten in Sioux City and completed his education in the USD 501 district. He graduated from Washburn University where he earned a Bachelor of Social Work Degree in 1980.
Donald began working at Winter General Hospital, now known as the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center at the age of 18. He left to join the U.S. Army and served as a cook while stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and Korea. After his military service, he returned to Winter General as a nursing assistant for 25 years. After retirement, Don pursued his college education to become a social worker, employed by SRS for 17 years.
Donald was a 50 year member of Calvary Baptist Church. He proudly served his church as an usher.
Prior to entering the U.S. Army, he married June M. Ewing on October 19, 1953 in Topeka. She survives. During this union of 65 years, Donald and June raised five children. Survivors include his wife, June, children; Donnie Albert Smith, III, Anthony Smith, Michael Smith, Carmen Smith and Damon Smith, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and family and friends.
Donald was preceded in death by two sons; Donald Smith, III on June 30, 2005, Anthony Smith on July 5, 2014 and his siblings; Betty Smith, Mary Lou Smith and JoAnn Redman.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Calvary Baptist Church, 433 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
