Doris D. Brown, 83, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019.
She was born October 22, 1935 in Olivet, Kansas, the daughter of John and Maggie "Hazel" (Danford) Hitchens. She was a 1953 graduate of Waverly High School, Waverly, Kansas.
Doris was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone until transitioning to raise her family. She worked for Volume Shoe, later known as Payless Shoes and finished her career with Topeka/Shawnee Health Department. Known as "Grandma Doris" she provided day care for numerous children over the years.
She was an active member of Countryside Christian Church, where she served in the Nursery and taught Sunday School.
Doris married Robert Edward "Bob" Brown on April 18, 1959 in Lyndon, Kansas. He survives. Other survivors include four children, Debbie (Jim) Davis of Auburn, Vicki (William) Slack of Wamego, Shelly (Jim) Vasey of Wichita and Randy (Sharon) Brown of Holts Summit, MO; 7 grandchildren Travis Catlin, Matthew (Bri) Kastner, Krystin (Alex) Gilpin, Drew (Caitlin) Kastner, Zac Vasey, Courtney (Jeff) Strawderman and Dustin Brown; and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Beatrice Godfrey and Thelma Sullivan.
Doris enjoyed taking care of children, sewing, shopping and cooking.
Honoring her request, cremation is planned. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2019 at Countryside Christian Church, 3635 NE Highway K4, Topeka, KS 66617. A celebration of life ceremony will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the church. Inurnment will follow at Grantville Cemetery, Grantville, Kansas.
