Doris Elizabeth Nelson, 82, formerly of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at her residence in Las Vegas, NV. She was born on March 7, 1924 in London, England, the daughter of Albert and Alice Todd Thomas. She lived most of her life in Topeka before moving to Las Vegas in 1989. She owned and operated Midwest Used Furniture Store, was a real estate investor, and managed Bit-O'Gold Cheese Shop in Topeka before retiring in 1987. She was a member of the British Club of Topeka and was active in various Bridge Clubs. Doris married Kenneth W. Nelson in 1947 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1968. Survivors include four children, Linda Head of Las Vegas, Alice Laizure of Topeka, Tim Nelson and Tom Nelson of Las Vegas, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters, Irene Homan of Rye, England, Jean Mathews of Melbourne, Australia, and one brother, David Thomas of London, England. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Doris will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
