Doris J. Metzger, 85, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021.
She was born September 3, 1936, in Huntsville, Missouri, the daughter of Willard Harrison and Opal May (Shoemaker) Mason. She was a graduate of Clifton Hill High School, Clifton Hill, MO where she played on the basketball team.
Doris married Max E. Metzger on June 18, 1955, in Clifton Hill, MO, then relocating to Topeka. In 1970 they began the Metzger Nursey in Topeka until Max retired in 2003. He survives in Topeka. Survivors include two sons, John Wesley (Amy) Metzger of Topeka and Max R. (Sharri) Metzger of Harveyville, KS; her daughter-in-law, Catherine Metzger; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; her brother, Ron (Nelsie) Mason of Huntsville, MO; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her canine companion, Sir Henry, who was the last of many dogs who were special to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Gail Dial on June 24, 2016; her son, Mason Chris Metzger on May 9, 2007; her son-in-law, Ollie Dial on September 6, 2021; and seven siblings.
Doris loved spending time with family and attending her grandchildren's activities. She was a homemaker and a wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed writing (her pen name was "Grandma Writes"), painting, scrapbooking, cooking, and making everyone's Christmas special. She also enjoyed watching the KU Jayhawks and the World Series if one of her teams was playing.
Honoring her request, cremation is planned. A private family celebration will be held later. Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel is assisting the family.
