Doris M. Worthington, 79, of Topeka, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 22, 2017 at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born August 19, 1937 in Topeka, the daughter of George and Ethel Clarke.
Doris was a 1955 graduate of Seaman High School where she was involved in many activities and worked at the Cloverleaf Drive In and at Duckwalls.
After graduating from high school, Doris was accepted into the Stormont Vail School of Nursing. During this period, she found that she really enjoyed working in the Emergency Room. Upon her graduation from nursing school she was hired as a staff nurse in the ER where she remained for her entire 30 year career. She was heavily involved in the treatment of victims of the 1966 tornado and was the Department Director for the last 15 years of her career.
Doris will always be remembered for her love of family, especially her grandchildren's school and sporting events which she never missed. She was always a very competitive person, whether it be at cards, racquetball, golf or KU sports, especially basketball.
Doris had a lifelong love of The Lord and her faith never faltered, regardless of what obstacles were placed in her way. She attended church regularly and even though her health was failing, she would still find a way to get to church.
Doris married Lowell Landis. They were divorced. Doris married Robert V. Worthington on November 11, 1978 in Topeka. He survives.
Other survivors include 2 sons, Tim Landis ( Lisa)and Ben Landis ( Meagan), both of Topeka; Step son, Robert Worthington, Jr., 7 grandchildren, 2 Step Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren, 2 Step Great Grandchildren; a sister, Georgia Clarke of Topeka and a brother, Bill Clarke (Lynn) of Prescott, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sarah Landis, and step-daughter, Deidra Worthington.
In keeping with Doris' wishes cremation is planned and a visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel from 6:00 to 7:30 on Thursday, January 26, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 27 at Western Hills Church, 2900 S.W. Auburn Rd., Topeka, KS 66614 with private inurnment at a later date.
