Dorothy E. Rumbley, 92, of Topeka, passed away April 27, 2012, at McCrite Plaza. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted friend to many. She was born June 20, 1919, in St. Marys, KS, to Joseph L. & Cora A. Yocum Vilven. She moved to Topeka in 1934; graduated from Topeka High School in 1937 and Washburn University in 1941.
She was married to Robert E. Rumbley, Sr. on March 17, 1950, in Topeka. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1984.
Dorothy worked for Falley's Inc. for 46 years, and was treasurer of the company when she retired in 1981. She was an active member of Highland Heights Christian Church, Topeka YWCA, Washburn Alumni Association, and Primetimer's Travel Club. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross, YWCA, and Dove Tail (or Doorstep) for many years.
She is survived by two children, Robert E. Rumbley, Jr. (Diane) of Hillsboro, MO, and Susan K. Sharrai (John) of Topeka. She has 10 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, and another one on the way.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Avenue, Topeka, KS 66605, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Topeka Cemetery. Mrs. Rumbley will lie in state from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland Heights Christian Church, The American Red Cross, or Doorstep.
