Funeral services for Dorothy Meier, 88, Topeka will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kansas. Graveside committal services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Alta Vista Cemetery, Alta Vista, Kansas.

Dorothy Zimmerman Meier, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on February 27, 2014, at Aldersgate Village, surrounded by her loving family. Preceding her in death were her husband, Frank Meier, Jr., her parents, her brother Charles Zimmerman, a son, Emil Meier, and a granddaughter, Jannelle Becker.

Dorothy was born on September 5, 1925 to Walter and Marion Brabb Zimmerman on the family farm near Templin, Kansas. She married Frank Meier, Jr. of Alta Vista, Kansas, on August 1, 1943. They were blessed with 48 years of happy marriage. To this union four children were born: Emil Meier (deceased), Mark Meier, married to wife Denise, Dennis Meier, married to wife Gail, and Calvert Meier, married to wife Mary. In addition, she is survived by two brothers, Robert Zimmerman and Earl Zimmerman, 9 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

In 1943, Dorothy graduated from Alta Vista High School. Following graduation, Dorothy worked at a bomb factory in Hastings, Nebraska in support of the war effort. After the war, she received a teaching certificate and taught school at North Pole and Pleasant Ridge Schools for 5 years. Later, Dorothy served for 6 years on the school board for USD 329.

Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother who worked diligently to ensure that the needs and goals of her loved ones were met. She worked as a strong partner in the operation of the family farm until she moved to Topeka in 1994. For 30 years, she accompanied Frank with his career with Union Pacific Railroad.
Dorothy had the heart of a servant assisting others with their needs over the years. In 2007, Dorothy was recognized as Red Cross Volunteer of the Year in Topeka. She was a woman of deep faith in God.

She was a student of Scripture and shared her faith over many years teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and participating in Bible studies and classes. She received much pleasure singing in the church choir and would go weekly to the nursing homes in Eskridge and Council Grove to sing to the residents. She fellowshipped with other members of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League over several decades.

Dorothy will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel in Topeka, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to either Prince Of Peace Lutheran Church 3625 SW Wanamaker Rd. Topeka, KS 66614 or to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 303 Main St, Alta Vista, KS 66834.
