Dorothy S. (Saylor) Leggitt, 91, of Maple Hill, Kansas passed away in her home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. She was born January 25, 1928, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of George Reitz and Ruth Aline (Milliken) Saylor. She was a graduate of West Waterloo High School and attended McPherson College. She later obtained an Associate's Degree at San Diego Community College. Dorothy was employed by the State of California and retired in 1983.
Dorothy married Robert Eugene Leggitt in 1947. They were later divorced, but had 6 children together. She is survived by daughters, Linda Kay and Donald Henderson of Henderson, NV, Katherine Alyne and David Goostree of Paxico, KS, Deborah Sue and Maurice Johnson of Campbell, CA, Karen Lynn and Fred Richards of Puyallup, WA; son, Steven Eugene and Cindy Leggitt of Tecumsch, KS; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her younger siblings, Eldon George Saylor, Patricia Ruth Neighbors, Richard James Saylor, and Donna Jean Keller. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter (Judy), and granddaughter (Christa).
Dorothy loved to flower garden. Her yard contained rows of daffodils, daisies, irises, lilies, and many other colorful bedding plants. She enjoyed her lilac and peony bushes. Garden gloves, a wide brimmed hat, and large dark sunglasses were her working garden attire.
Enthusiasm describes Dorothy's passion for cross-stitching. She was always working on a project in her comfortable favorite chair . . . flowers, landscapes, nature, holiday, and inspirational words were her specialties. She often gave them as gifts.
Reading was a favorite activity for Dorothy. She liked to go to the library to check-out books. She was an avid reader of western and mystery genres.
Dorothy was an excellent seamstress. She sewed shirts, shorts, pajamas, dresses, and elaborate formals for her children while they were growing up. She continued that skill by making clothing for many of her grandchildren.
Other interests were dot-to-dot, crossword, and jigsaw puzzles.
Per her request, Dorothy was cremated. The children met among themselves for a simple private service which also honored their mother's wishes.
