Dorothy Mae Risebig

November 20, 1925 — May 6, 2016

Dorothy Mae Risebig, 90, of Topeka, passed away at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka on Friday morning, May 6, 2016. She was born in Kansas City, MO on November 20, 1925 to Claude and Mamie Patrick. She grew up in Kansas City, MO and graduated from East High School.

While in high school Dorothy studied violin with Robert Young (KC Philharmonic) at Jenkins Music Co in downtown KCMO. There she met Clarence Risebig who was also studying violin. They were married on June 25, 1944 in Indiantown Gap, PA while he was on leave from the Army.

After raising her daughters, Dorothy went to school part-time at Washburn University, studying violin with Dr. Everett Fetter and taking music theory and aural comprehension classes. She was a member of the Topeka Symphony and enjoyed playing with a string quartet for weddings and other special occasions. She became a theory teacher with the Topeka String Project while starting a thriving studio teaching Suzuki violin. She enjoyed attending Suzuki Institutes in Ottawa, KS, for many years. She was a well-respected teacher in the area and beyond, and many of her students continued violin in college and have become teachers themselves.

Dorothy was a faithful member of Second Presbyterian Church and served in many roles including Sunday School teacher, Bible Study leader, member of the choir, instrumental soloist, volunteer with an after-school program called "Logos", hospitality worker, and deacon. She was active with Job's Daughters for many years, member of the past Topeka Forestry Club, Eastern Star Helena Chapter, Music Study Club, Minerva Club, and an alumnae of Sigma Alpha Iota Patronesses.

Dorothy loved tole painting, gardening, camping with family, collecting and trying new cooking recipes, and especially baking cookies.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, in 2008.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Claudia Risebig and Meribeth Risebig, both of Overland Park; nephew, Mike Chandler (Cheryl) of Holt, MO; and niece, Kathy Steffens (Earl) of Tifton, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, May 12, at Second Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm the same day at Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO.
