Dorothy May Lyons

Dorothy May Lyons, formerly of Topeka, died Wednesday, March 5, at Olathe Medical Center. She was 69.

Dorothy May Goodman Lyons was born Jan. 20, 1939, in Bakersfield, Ca., the daughter of Walter Blaine and Bonnie Belle McKeen Goodman. She grew up in Bakersfield and Trona, Ca. She graduated from Trona High School in 1957.

Before moving to Topeka in 1981, she and her family lived in Amarillo, Tx. She was a homemaker and loved being a mother to her four children. She and her husband of 43 years enjoyed traveling in their motor home, playing golf and bowling. She enjoyed playing cards, reading and spending time with her family.

She had been living in Waverly for the past 17 months and enjoyed small town living with her daughter and her family. She made many friends while living in Waverly and was active in her grandchildren's lives. She was happy to be able to travel to Texas to see her great-grandchildren which were a great joy to her.

She married Charles Timothy "Tim" Lyons, June 22, 1958 in Las Vegas, Nv. He died Feb. 20, 2001.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister Bonnie Marie Stewart.

Survivors include a son, Charles Timothy Lyons II and Shirley McCulley, Topeka; three daughters, Laura Avery Olson and her husband Mike, Amarillo, Tx; Anne Katherine Frantz and her husband Lee, Wichita; and Amy Elizabeth Johnson and her husband Tim, Waverly; eight grandchildren, Kathleen Lyons, Erin Olson, Shannon and Drew Downs, and Lauren, Clayton, Carly Jo and Luke Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Copen and Blaine Downs, and Jayce Downs; and two sisters, Avery Anderson, Ridgecrest, Ca., and Catherine Andersen, Ridgecrest, Ca.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Mt. Hope Chapel with entombment in Mt. Hope Mausoleum in Topeka. Newcomer Family Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorothy Lyons Memorial Fund to benefit her grandchildren and sent to Newcomer Family Funeral Home, 4020 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66606.
