Dorothy Louise Painter Rush, 99, Topeka, died Monday, October 13, 2008, at her home.
She was born in Barclay, KS, the daughter of Eldo and Rhoda Painter on December 29, 1908. Her older sister Lucille, died in 1906, and her beloved brother, Ralph Painter died earlier this year at 101.
Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Orwin Rush on June 14, 1933. He preceded her in death in 1999. They had four children: Barbara, and her husband, Marshall LaCombe, Beaverton, OR; Donald Rush; Bradford, and his wife, Irene Rush and Susan, and her husband, Robert Wright, all of Topeka. She had 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren that were dearly loved.
Dorothy and Orwin were world travelers both by boat & trains, enjoying many wonderful adventures together. Their favorite pastime was Bridge & Scrabble. More recently, Dorothy and her many Bridge friends would get together twice a week. They took good care of her. It was the highlight of her week.
Dorothy grew-up in a Quaker community and was a lifetime member of the Society of Friends Quakers.
She graduated from Friends University and became a Math teacher, teaching in Benton, KS in the 20's. Dorothy moved to New York City with her new husband, Orwin while he attended graduate school at Columbia University for Library Science. His job took them to many places. They lived in England for a year on a Full-bright in 1952. They moved to Tallahassee, FL in the 60's where she taught Math at Leon High School and became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Dorothy also studied and received a Librarian degree. While in Florida she worked as a travel agent. They moved to Amarillo, TX in the 70's where she was a librarian at the college there. In the early 80's they moved back to Kansas and purchased a motor home traveling to every National Park in America.
Dorothy was full of love and pure energy. She kept diaries all her life, researching her family history while they traveled. She wrote a detailed genealogy with the help of her daughters. Dorothy was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to all and will be missed dearly.
A private celebration of Dorothy's life will be held Monday, October 20th. Burial will be in Barclay Cemetery in Barclay, KS.
