Dorothy Schul

June 8, 1931 — February 27, 2021

On Saturday, February 27, Dorothy (Dot) Schul beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother left us at age 89.

Dot was born June 8, 1931 in Hamilton Kansas to Raymond and Caroline (Kathary) Carson. A child of the Depression, she learned the value of hard work, thrift and an ever present positive outlook early on.
She graduated with a degree in Education from Kansas State Teachers College in 1953, marrying her life partner Allan Duaine Schul later that year. He was soon off to Quantico as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and she remained in Kansas to teach physical education. Their separation was short-lived as she soon joined him in Florida for the birth of their first son Jeff. Two daughters, Jill and Joy, followed over the next four years after a return to Kansas.

Dot's greatest passion was for family, not only her own children but the many Carson and Schul relatives. Family reunions and graduations were not to be missed. Her positive attitude was infectious, and she was always ready to do anything, go anywhere and try something new.
She was accomplished at cross stitch, handcrafting Christmas stockings for her children, their spouses and most importantly her eight grandchildren (along with the cross stitch quilts she made for each grandchild commemorating their birth.) Her quilting skills were also legendary, and she produced unique works of art (made from their accumulated t-shirts) for each of the grandchildren to commemorate their high school graduations.

When she wasn't busy with quilting or cross stitch, playing golf was her passion. She was a Topeka City 9-hole champion and then moved up to play with the "big girl's" or 18-holers. She enjoyed golf-centered friends and travel. She continued to play well into her 80s, wishing only that she could just "hit it like I used to". She was a lifelong bridge player and played bunco in her later years.
When she wasn't busy with hand work or sports, she found time to substitute teach in physical education, work in the accounting department of Merchant's National Bank and helped coordinate weddings. Through the years she also stayed in touch at monthly luncheons with her Alpha Sigma Tau sorority sisters.

She was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease four years ago. In spite of a progressive decline in her physical abilities, she maintained her ever positive attitude along with her sense of humor. She of course became a favorite of her in home care givers. Special thanks to Victoria and Stephanie for their kindness and care.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Dick and Larry and sister Norma as well as her husband Duaine Schul. She is survived by three children, Jeff, Jill Rice and Joy (Doug) Anderson; grandchildren David, Eric, Hannah and Carolyn Schul; Tyler, Trevor and Tarra Anderson; Kyle Rice; and great-granddaughter, Tate Anderson; her sister Nancy Philo; and her sister-in-law Charlene Gustafson.

Perhaps the only thing bigger than her smile was her heart and she will be greatly missed.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2021 at Dove Cremations and Funerals, Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be 3:30 p.m., Friday at the Janesville Cemetery, Hamilton, Kansas.
