Doug passed away unexpectedly shortly after Christmas on December 30, 2013. He will be profoundly missed by his family and friends.
Doug was born in Kansas City on March 21, 1947. He graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School and went on to complete his bachelor's degree at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. He began work at Southwestern Bell and continued in the telecommunications field as a branch manager at AT&T. He retired after 30 years and lived in Equador for several years before settling in Topeka, Kansas.
Doug enjoyed the adventure of world travels and was an avid KU basketball fan. He found joy in spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He loved being outdoors and the freedom of cycling; an activity he shared with his brother and son. His love of cars and racing will be remembered by many in the BMW Car Club of America. He had a warm welcoming spirit and could strike up a conversation with anyone.
His family finds comfort in knowing that he was a Christian and your prayers of support, fond and happy memories are greatly appreciated during this time.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents, Keith and Geraldine Rutherford, and a niece. He is survived by his two children, Justin Rutherford (Casey) of Overland Park, KS and Megan Groves (Jason) of Liberty, MO; his grandchildren, Andrew and Lauren Groves and Parker Rutherford; his brother Dennis "Hap" Rutherford (Carrie)and sister Nancy Artzer (Dennis) of Topeka; and several nephews and their families in Topeka and Lawrence, KS.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Community Church in Leawood, KS, 14200 Kenneth Rd, Leawood, KS 66224 on Saturday, January, 11th at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (www.nationalmssociety.org) in his honor.
