Douglas Lynn Young

October 30, 1954 — March 2, 2025

Douglas L. Young, 70, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025. He was born on October 30, 1954, in Topeka, KS, to Francis and Jane (Miltonberger) Young.

Doug graduated from Holton High School in 1973 and remained an active alumnus of Washburn University. He worked for Evergy for 41 years at the Tecumseh and Jeffrey Energy Centers, retiring as the Manager of Field Communications in 2017 in the downtown offices.

As a child, Doug attended church with his mother and two brothers. In his 20s, his faith journey led him to read the book of Revelation. After a Bible study going through Revelation and the Romans road with Duane Corkill, a man he met at Topeka Gospel Chapel, Doug chose to trust the Lord with his life. He recognized his need for salvation to escape the dark world described in the Bible and prayed to Jesus for forgiveness. Doug married Kimberly Everhart on May 29, 1982, in Topeka, KS. Throughout their lives, he and Kimberly faithfully attended Topeka Gospel Chapel, where Doug served as an elder for over 25 years. Kimberly continues to fellowship with the body of believers at the chapel. Doug and Kim loved to travel together, often returning to their favorite destination: Estes Park, Colorado. Their recent trips included a visit to Canada, an Alaskan cruise, a motorcycle ride through Montana, a getaway to the coast of California, and a family vacation to Colorado Springs.

Doug cherished quality time with his family and often dedicated his days to helping others. His warm hospitality reached his family, church community, friends, and neighbors alike. During retirement, he served as a Bible Study Fellowship leader, enjoyed woodworking, took long motorcycle rides, and spent abundant time with his children and grandchildren. He especially loved watching soccer games featuring his grandsons, and babysitting his grandson. Doug's son, Christopher (Alexandra) Young, and daughter, Brittany (Brady) Buxman of Topeka, blessed him with six grandchildren: Lorelai, Hendricks, Theodore, and Abram Young, along with Harrison and Graham Buxman, all from Topeka, who will continue to bring joy to Kim. His survivors include brother Greg (Terri) Young of Holton, sister-in-law Marilyn Young of Topeka, niece Breann (Andrew) Hinman, nephew Donovan (Kelli) Young, mother-in-law Doris Everhart, five brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steve Young, who passed away on July 11, 2013.

A celebration of life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8th at Topeka Gospel Chapel at 5919 NW Glenwood Drive in Topeka, KS with Jerry Keller and Bruce Everhart officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery at 6th and Gage Blvd. Family will receive friends 6:00-7:30 p.m. Friday evening at Dove Southwest Chapel at 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Topeka Gospel Chapel.
