Dr. Gary L. Counselman, 69, Topeka, passed away Monday, October 6, 2014 at Midland Hospice House.
Gary was born April 14, 1945 in Macomb, IL, the son of Guy E. Counselman and June Counselman-McCormick. He graduated from V.I.T. High School and served in the U. S Army from 1968-71.
He graduated from Palmer College in Davenport, IA, with a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree in 1968.
He practiced in Topeka for 42 years. He partnered with Dr. Dennis Wade for the past 30+ years and his son Dr. Brett Counselman joined the practice 8 years ago.
He was a member of the Kansas Chiropractic Association (KCA) since 1972 and served on numerous committees and boards. He was also a member of the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts since 2003, served as Vice President from 2010-11 and President from 2011-12. He was named KCA Doctor of the Year in 1989. He was also a member of the High Country Chiropractic Knights of the Round Table since July, 2000; and a Fellow with the International College of Chiropractors, Inc., since October 2000.
He was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, flying, hunting, and family trips to Jamaica.
Gary married Lou Ellen Bruning on November 4, 1972 in Hiawatha, KS. She survives. Other survivors include daughter, Angela (Chris) Dow, Tulsa, OK; sons, Dr. Brett Counselman and Thad Counselman, both of Topeka; grandchildren, Connor, Corban, Audrey; sister, Tammie Blindt; and brother, Brian McCormick, both of Vermont, IL. He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Counselman; mother, June Counselman-McCormick; brother, Ed Counselman; and step-father, Hale McCormick.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014 at First Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Gary will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
