Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Bergen, 80, of Topeka, died at his home on Tuesday, February 25, 2014.
Jerry was born on August 19, 1933 in Marysville to Walter and Marion (Messick) Bergen. He attended Marysville High School and graduated from Ottawa University with a bachelor's degree and from Kansas State University with a doctorate degree.
Jerry served honorably in the United States Army in Germany from 1953 to 1955.
He worked for many years at his alma mater KSU as a financial aid advisor. He later moved to Topeka and worked for the Kansas Board of Regents and for the Shawnee County Prevention and Recovery Services, only recently retiring.
Jerry was married to M. Betsy (Clark) Moberly on June 30, 1967 at the College Avenue United Methodist Church in Manhattan.
He was a charter member of the Topeka Rotary Club and was a supporter of the Topeka Civic Theatre. He was an enthusiastic K-State fan and enjoyed woodcarving in his spare time.
Jerry is survived by his loving spouse, M. Betsy Bergen of Topeka, son, Kevin (Michele) Bergen of Olathe; step-son, Alan (Dianna) Moberly of Manhattan; two daughters, Jeri (Tasha) James of Lawrence, and Kirsten Bergen of Seneca; eight grandsons, Jeremy (Debbie) Bergen, Christopher (Anna) Bergen, Justin (Rachel) James, Travis (Andrea) James, David Moberly, Joseph (Erin) Moberly, Benjamin Moberly, Kian Foster; five granddaughters, Kendra Volz, Aleatha (Samuel) Shannon, Mary (Chris) Koeven, Emma Moberly, Rebecca Moberly; two sisters, Carmen (Woody) Ramsey and Carol Hague; one brother, Lynn (Bert) Bergen; and one sister-in-law, Nora Bergen Tryon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Marion Bergen, one step-son, Grady Joe Moberly, and one brother, Jack Bergen,
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at 1:00p.m., on Monday, March 10 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka.
