Dr. Harveyj. Mcarthur

Dr. Harvey John McArthur, 89, Baldwin City, Kansas formerly of Topeka, Kansas, died July 3, 2008 at the Baldwin Care Center. He was born in Salina, Kansas on October 16, 1918 the son of Clarence and Myrtle (Markham) McArthur. He attended public schools in Salina and graduated from Salina High School. Harvey was an Eagle Scout. In May of 1941 he graduated from Kansas University with a Degree in Secondary Education. On June 16, 1941, he married the love of his life, Madge Eva Jones in Stafford, Kansas. On June 21, 1941, he was inducted into the Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and served in the United States and overseas in the European Theater until the end of the war in 1945.

Harvey returned home from World War II after being discharged from the Army with the rank of Captain. Harvey taught first in Burrton, Kansas and then at Central Jr. High School in Lawrence, Kansas while obtaining his Masters Degree in 1949. He then became a Representative for the Scott Foresman Text Book Company. After five years with the company he returned to his true love, teaching, serving in the Lecompton Public School System as a Teacher and Principal while working to complete his Doctoral Degree which he received from the University of Kansas. Dr. McArthur then became Curriculum Director in the Liberty, Missouri School District. He later was a professor at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and finished this teaching career as a professor of Education at Washburn University of Topeka.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 67 years, Madge. Other survivors include his two beloved daughters; Rebecca (Becky) McMillen and her husband Danny of Baldwin City, Kansas, Sally Mayo and her husband Dennis of Topeka, Kansas, and one son, John C. McArthur and his wife Sandra of Topeka, Kansas; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; 10 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Buhler of Assaria, Kansas and Lila Crow of Salina, Kansas.

Graveside services will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas at 17th and Fairlawn on Tuesday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow. Harvey will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road after 2:00 p.m. on Monday and visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
