Dr. Josephdoyne Sargent Jr.

March 14, 1932 — February 29, 2016

Dr. Joseph D. Sargent, MD, died on the 29th day of February 2016 at Brewster Place Rehabilitation Center in Topeka, Kansas. He was born April 14th, 1932 to Iva Virginia (Rinaca) and Joseph Doyne Sargent in Lima, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in bacteriology and then from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1958. During his time in college he was a member of ROTC and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army after graduation. He did an internship at Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, his residency at Henry Ford Hospital, also in Detroit, and a fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at the Menninger Foundation. His great enjoyment and enthusiasm for life are reflected in his musical activities and his pioneering medical research and publications.

He married Nancy J. Boden on the 6th of June 1959 and was stationed at Fort Wolters, Texas thereafter. He was in active duty in the Army from 1962-1964 and then retired in 1964 with the rank of Captain. After a year of working at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, he returned to the Menninger Foundation where he was employed as an associate internist from 1966-1972 then became the Chief of Internal Medicine from 1973-1991 and from 1991-1994 he served as the Department Director of Internal Medicine and Neurology. He was a pioneer in the field of bio-feedback techniques to deal with severe migraine headaches and he wrote numerous papers and had numerous publications in the field.

He is survived by his wife of the home and four daughters, Amy Sargent of University Park, Maryland, Sarah Sargent of Buckingham, England, Jennifer Sargent of Keswick, Virginia and Laura Cummings (Brent) of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Sue Muhlencamp of St. Joseph, Michigan and 7 grandchildren, Elise & Paul Nycz, Joseph &Macleod Drury, Emily & Meredith Cummings, and Charlotte Sargent.

Joe was involved in many activities including Topeka (Quaker) Friends Meeting, and St. David's Episcopal Church, of Topeka, Kansas. He was an active member of the St. David's choir, the Topeka Opera Society Concert Association, serving as president from 2014-2016, and a member of the Shawnee Choral Society. He had a trained voice and enjoyed singing for friends, family, the public and church members. He was a member of the Fortnightly Club and served on the board of directors of Catholic Community Services.

He was very involved with many medical associations. He was a member of the American Medical Association, an auditor for the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, a Fellow at the American College of Physicians, a Fellow at the American Psychosomatic Society, a Fellow at the Bio-feedback Research Society, a member of the American Association for the Study of Medicine, a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, Secretary-treasurer and President of the Kansas Society of Internal Medicine, Secretary and Course Director for the American Association for Study of Headaches, and served as an officer in the American Headache Society. He served on the editorial board for many medical journals; Bio-feedback and Self-Regulation, Headache, and Topics in Pain Management-Current Concepts and Treatment Strategy.

He retired from the Menninger Foundation in 1994 and was in private medical practice in Topeka for another 3 years. Joe participated in many activities with his family; hiking in Colorado, attending track meets, horse shows, walking the family dogs, telling jokes and enjoying all life offered him.
A memorial service will be held on April 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 3916 SW 17th, Topeka, Kansas 66604.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Music Fund at St. David's Episcopal Church in Topeka, Kansas or the charity of the donor's choice.
