Dr. Richard H. Hamilton, 91, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. He was born January 13, 1920 at Fort Scott, Kansas the son of John Vesey and Ruth McElroy Hamilton.
Richard received his early education in the Chanute, Kansas public schools and graduated from Chanute High School and Chanute Junior College. He received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from the School of Dentistry, University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army Dental Corp during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in Hawaii, and was discharged as a Major in 1946. He started practice in Topeka in 1947 and served as President of the Kansas Orthodontic Society, the Kansas State Dental Association, The Delta Dental Plan of Kansas. Richard was a part time faculty member of the UMKC Orthodontic Department as an Assistant Professor and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, The International College of Dentists. He was a member of Southwestern Society of Orthodontics, The Foundation for Orthodontic Research, Pierre Fauchard Academy and was Man of the Year of the Kansas State Dental Association in 1983. He received the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry Distinguished Orthodontic Alumnus Award in 1989. Dr. Hamilton was a member of Grace Cathedral, Siloam Lodge No. 225, Scottish Rite Bodies, Royal Order of Jesters and Arab Shrine, where he served as potentate in 1984.
Richard married Bette Nadine Crawford in 1942. She preceded him in death in 1953. He was married to Lorene Miller in 1954. Richard is survived by his wife Lorene; three sons, Douglas Hugh (Videlle) Hamilton, Valley City, North Dakota, Brad Hugh (Beth) Hamilton, Denver Colorado, Dr. Scott D'Arcy (Mary) Hamilton, Topeka, Kansas 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A memorial ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Inurnment will follow. Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
