Dr. Rogerharold Carlson

May 31, 1941 — May 15, 2013

Dr. Roger Harold Carlson, 71, Wakarusa, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013.

Roger was born May 31, 1941 on the family farm in Winnebago, IL to Walter and Florence Carlson, the youngest of 7 children. He was a graduate of Winnebago High School and went on to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology with a minor in chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1964.

He met and married his wife Leticia while completing his Masters degree in microbiology, and water resources at the University of Michigan in 1966. He obtained a Ph.D. in environmental health science from the University of Michigan in 1976, and moved to Topeka, Kansas shortly thereafter and served the State of Kansas as the Director of Health and Environmental Laboratories from the 1970's to 2000. He then served the State of Pennsylvania in a similar position until retiring in Topeka in 2007.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Leticia, two sisters Jean Meissen of Winnebago, IL, Elsie Westphal of Rockford, IL, and one brother Raymond Carlson of St. Joseph, IL.

Roger and Leticia had 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Surviving children include John Carlson (Amy), St. Paul, MN; Kristopher Carlson (Amber), Lawrence, KS; Kimberly Carlson, Kansas City, MO; and Ryan Carlson (Shauna) of Austin, TX. Grandchildren surviving include Madalyn, Ann, Evelyn, Amelia and Brantley Carlson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruby Bridgeland and Harriett Dickinson; and one brother, Warren Carlson.

Roger was intensely curious and tenaciously persistent at any task and had a great love for the outdoors and all living things. When not spending time with his family, or involved in public service, he was an avid outdoorsman, naturalist, and historian.

The family held a private service and asks that any donations be made in Roger's name to the Sierra Club.

Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
