Dr. Wiley Hartley

March 27, 1937 — November 29, 2020

Dr. Roy Wiley Hartley, of Topeka, Kansas passed away November 29th, 2020 at the age of 83.

Roy was born March 27, 1937 in Delphos, KS to Roy Hartley and Grace Louise (Wiley) Hartley.

He attended Delphos High School and was drawn to the medical field through the influence of the local doctor.

After graduation from high school, Roy attended the University of Kansas. It was during this time he married his high school sweetheart, Sara Lee, on September 7, 1958. He then attended the University of Kansas Medical School, graduating in 1963, the same year he and Sara welcomed their first daughter, Shelly. He completed his residency at Saint Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

The family relocated to Cape May, New Jersey from 1964-1966 in order to fulfill his military obligation in the Coast Guard. He often said it was the best assignment he could have received. In 1966, Roy started a private medical practice in Goodland, Kansas. It was there that they welcomed their second daughter, Amy.

In 1967, Roy began his medical practice in Norton, Kansas at The Doctor's Building, joining Doctors Colip, Hartman, and Long. In 1974, he had the privilege of delivering his best friend, his son Jason. During his practice, Dr. Hartley won the hearts of many throughout Norton County with his gracious and devoted love of people, acts of kindness, and dedication to his patients. He retired in 2006 and in 2014 he and Sara relocated to Topeka, KS.

As dedicated as he was to his patients, above all else, Roy was a family man and spent countless hours, weekends, even lunch breaks investing and enriching the lives of his children. Fond memories his children will carry with them include reading together at night, swinging over his lunch break, coaching softball, attending BB gun events, traveling for AQHA shows, boating at the lake, and making his famous homemade ice cream. As his children grew and relocated to college, he would send them off with his homemade chocolate chip cookies, reassuring them he was only a phone call away, and that his love and support was limitless.

As his children created families of their own, Roy gained the title of Grandpa and later Great-Grandpa. He cherished time with his grandkids and always had a cold bottle of Coke and a big hug waiting for them. There are many memories of the county fair, feeding horses, board games, sleepovers and special holiday celebrations. He enjoyed woodworking and created many treasured heirlooms for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He followed KU Basketball, KC Chiefs football, and was an avid reader.

There will not be a day that goes by that his loved ones are not reminded of his deep and steadfast love. He will forever be missed by Sara, his wife of 62 years; children Shelly (Doug) Shepherd of Topeka, KS, Amy (Shad) Chandler of Almena, KS, and Jason (Amanda) Hartley of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren Scott (Brittnee) and Kelsey Shepherd, Kenzie (John) Griffiths,Erika (Philip) Carter, Hunter Chandler, Lydia, Anna, and Sophie Hartley; great-grandchildren Annaleigh Curtis and Jameson Shepherd, Vail and Diem Griffiths, Banks and Wiley Carter, and one to arrive in late December; nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and sister-in-law.
