Duane Kerschner

Duane Kerschner of Topeka, Kansas passed through death into life eternal Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Sunflower CLC in Topeka.

He was born May 17, 1933 in Tiffin, Ohio to Katherine Montz Kerschner and Jay Forest Kerschner. He is survived by his daughters Paula Kerschner, Karla Haag and son-in-law Ernie Haag all of Topeka and his only grandchild, Jayden Haag, of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Duane spent his childhood in Tiffin, Ohio growing up as the youngest of 15 siblings. He attended Columbian High School. Upon turning 18, Duane enlisted in the United States Air Force serving in both Korea and Vietnam. During his 20 years in the USAF he worked as an aircraft fighter mechanic; flight engineer and radar maintenance technician in air traffic control. Duane was awarded the Air Force Accommodation Medal twice.

Duane married a hometown girl, Janet Lewis in 1959 and enjoyed 58 years of marriage. They had three daughters Paula, Jana, and Karla.

Upon his retirement from the USAF in 1972 Duane began his second career working at the Topeka VA.

He began as a Housekeeper and was soon promoted to the warehouse as a Warehouseman. In 1976 he was again promoted becoming the Foreman of the Housekeeping Department where he served until his retirement in 1992. Over the next 14 years, until Duane's "final" retirement he worked for Huntington Park Auto, the Menninger Foundation, Dillard's and Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene.

Duane was devoted to his family. He was an avid baseball fan and never met a dog he didn't like.

He enjoyed gardening and taking care of his lawn. Duane's faith in God was important to him and he was an active member of his local church.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, eleven brothers, three sisters, his wife Janet Mae (Lewis) Kerschner and his daughter Jana Kay Kerschner.

Duane was supported by dogs that were trained by members of the Canine Assistance Rehabilitation Education and Services. The family suggests memorials in his memory to CARES, P.O. Box 314, Concordia, KS 66901

Duane gifted his body to Kansas City University of Medicine & Bioscience.
At his request a public ceremony is not planned.
