Dwight A. Pokorny

Dwight Anthony Pokorny, 66, of Topeka, passed away at his residence on Saturday, October 16, 2010. He was born June 6, 1944 in Little Sioux, Iowa, the son of Anthony and Lucille Pokorny.

Dwight graduated from Hayden High School in 1962 and attended Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. He was a member of the United States Marine Reserves from 1965 to 1971. Dwight retired from the internal auditing of disbursments at Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad in 2004. He was a member of the State and National Associations of Certified Fraud Examiners since 1994. He recently enjoyed working part-time at Laird-Noller Lincoln Mercury as a courtesy car driver.

Dwight's athletic interests were many including completing seven marathon races, many half marathons, and being a spirited Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals fan. He enjoyed fishing, nature and traveling, of which his favorite annual destination was to Washington for salmon fishing. Friendly competition and family rivalry, always made this a spirited adventure. Dwight was proud to volunteer in many political campaigns and through the community blood bank, donated an average of 30 gallons per year. He had a great love of cars, meticulously maintaining and restoring them. He always enjoyed a good road trip. Most of all, Dwight loved to laugh and joke. His legacy is his commitment to friends and family and completing the job that was his to do. He quitely shared courageous strength of character throughout his life and during his brief illness with cancer.

Dwight is survived by his wife, Valerie Smith; sisters, Marcella Muller, Angela Kerin, Fran Chupalio, Shirley Cohn, and Rosalie Negus; brother, Chris Pokorny; many nieces and nephews; his faithful four-legged companion, Isabela; and many close friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at Ensley Gardens at Lake Shawnee at 11:00 a.m. October 29, 2010.
