Etta Ruth Kemper Larson, age 94, of Council Grove, KS passed away May 2, 2016. She was born October 15, 1921 in Hutchinson, KS and was adopted by a maternal uncle and his wife, Lee and Rowena Kemper of Garden City, KS. She graduated from Garden City High School and attended Garden City Junior College and Kansas University majoring in public school music education. She was trained in voice, violin and piano.
Ruth enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943. She attended boot camp and Cooks and Bakers School at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. She served at Henderson Hall, Arlington, VA, which is separated from Arlington Cemetery by only a fence. She carried the haunting memory of the constant sounding of "Taps" throughout the day.
Thru the years, Ruth was employed as a teacher, a legal secretary, an area representative for Welcome Wagon and for The Christian Childrens Fund of St. Louis, MO.
On May 1, 1966 she was married to Warren D. Larson of Manhattan, KS. They moved to Council Grove in 1970 and together owned and operated Council Grove Florists and Greenhouse. Warren preceded Ruth in death in 1996.
As a member of the First Congregational Church she served several years on the church council, Diaconate, and 17 years as president of The Womens Fellowship. She directed the church choir for 10 years. In 1974 and 1975 she directed the Community Chorus, and was a pianist, organist and vocalist assisting in funeral services and civic functions.
Ruth served as President of the Women's Republican Club, and served on the campaigns of many candidates. She is a lifetime member of American Legion Post 0121 and the auxiliary, a member of the Council Oaks Chapter of The Daughters of The American Revolution. She served as secretary of the Board of Bowers Community Center and well as volunteering for the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
She is survived by her son Michael Larson and his wife Kay of Gilbert, AZ; her daughter Frances Dudley and husband Tom of Topeka, KS; her sisters: Betty Jo Davis and husband Bill of Overland Park, KS and Janice Thompson and husband Bart of Sunnyvale, CA granddaughter Hilary Porterfield of Basalt, CO; nephews: Mark Flurry Kemper and family of Wichita, KS, Sherfy Kemper and family of Topeka, KS, Eugene Kemper and family of Montezuma, KS; and a niece Annette Kemper of Cape Coral, FL.
An Inurnment service will take place at 2:00 PM Friday, May 13th, 2016 at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, KS.
