Earl D Butler, 83, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Brewster Place Retirement Community.
Earl was born December 5, 1931 in Birch Tree, MO, the son of Dan and Maude (Shelley) Butler. He graduated from Birch Tree High School where he was a star Basketball player. He received his Bachelor's degree from Arkansas State University and Master's degree from the University of Kansas.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and the N.E.A.
He began his teaching career in a one-room school in Missouri, later teaching in DeSoto and Topeka, before moving to California where he became Principal of the Walt Disney Elementary School in Anaheim, CA for 14 years. He was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of the Magnolia School District in Anaheim, retiring in the early 1990's.
Earl married Phyllis Churchill on August 19, 1956. She survives. Other survivors include daughters, Kymm (Bret) Ledbetter, Kristie (Ken) Schimmel-Smith, both of Topeka; 5 grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Ruth Hensley, Birch Tree, MO, and Margaret (Richard) Pennycuick, Claremore, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Butler.
He was a great dad and grandfather, loved children and was a hard worker.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2014 at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service.
