Edith Elnor Higgins, 80, died Saturday, March 18, 2006, at McCrite Care Center, Topeka.
She was born Aug. 17, 1925 in Hamburg, IA, the daughter of Floyd and Martha Means Tooley and graduated from Hastings, Nebraska High School in 1943. She lived in Gardner for 25 years before coming to Topeka in 2003.
Mrs. Higgins worked for the Kansas Association for the Blind from 1973-1974 and was a member of the auxillaries of the Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and Blind Veterans of America. Her favorite hobby was knitting, and she won numerous awards at county fairs. She also was an accomplished pianist and played for various churches.
She married William J. Bryan on April 28, 1945 in Topeka. She later married Marvin J. Higgins on Aug. 13, 1973 in Topeka. He died Dec. 23, 1986. She was also preceded in death by a son, William B. Bryan, on April 15, 2005 and a brother, Robert Tooley.
Survivors include three daughters, Rita Fincher and husband, Neal, Medford, OR, Lois Kershaw and husband, Kobi, Snoqualmie, WA, and Beth Dickson, Topeka; a son, Randall Bryan and wife Linda, Central Point, OR; two brothers, Jerry Tooley, Taunton, MA and Wayne Tooley, Milan, IL; a sister, Millie White, Vidor, TX; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Monday at Newcomer Family Funeral Home. Private family inurnment will be in Gardner Cemetery, Gardner, Kansas.
