Edward Joseph Szabo, 76, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2006 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born on March 31, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Metz Szabo. He was a 20 year career Air Force veteran, and served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War before retiring in 1971. He then was employed by the Colmery O'Neil VA Medical Center for fifteen years before retiring. He then was employed by the State of Kansas as a Grain Inspector for nine years before retiring in 2000. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion. He was an avid bowler. Edward married Virginia Lea Hughes on May 19, 1962 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Pavlik of Cleveland, OH, Theresa Nunn of Solon, OH, several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthews Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Auburn Cemetery where military honors will be presented by a burial detail from Whiteman Air Force Base, Knobnoster, MO. Edward will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where a Prayer Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday evening and the family will receive friends from 6:30- 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 2700 S.E.
