Edward K. Young, 81, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2006 at his home. He was born on December 28, 1924 in Chattanooga, TN, the son of Harvey and Jenny Henry Young. He had resided in Topeka since 1948. He was a Navy veteran of WWII. He served his plumbing and pipefitting apprenticeship with Local No. 165. He was employed by Shean and Deagan Plumbing. In 1966, he led the opening of the plumbing division of McElroy's Inc.. In 1969, he and his wife, Dorothy A. Young formed Young's Inc. which he was still actively involved in. Ed was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 165. He married Dorothy A. Thurber on March 23, 1946 in Lawrence. She preceded him in death on June 29, 1989. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Jo Hanson in July of 1997, one brother, Harvey Young and one sister, Aileen Holdiness. Survivors include his best friend, Betty Clay of Topeka, two daughters, Sharon A. Copeland and husband, Melvin of Topeka, Christy L. Lockard and husband, Chuck of Tecumseh, seven grandchildren, Amanda Thompson, Kenny Copeland, Carrie Gilliland, Jennifer Hanson, Jarrett Lockard, Devon Lockard, Paige Hanson, three great-grandchildren, Skyler Thompson, Clayton Gilliland and Karli Gilliland, two sisters, Mackie Jean Tarvin and Barbara Ruth Brown, both of Georgia and one brother, James R. Young of Georgia. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Chapel Mausoleum. Entombment will follow. Ed will lie in state after Noon Monday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday evening.
