Edward Lee Bailey, 72, passed away on March 17, 2011. He died in peace, surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was born in Atchison, Kansas to William and Margaret Bailey. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1956, the University of Kansas in 1960, and the University of Kansas Law School in 1963. Ed was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 1964 and as a Staff Judge Advocate, he was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. There he met the love of his life, Sarah Baker from Memphis, Tennessee, a Second Lt. Air Force Nurse. Ed and Sarah were married February 27, 1965 in the military chapel on base. Later that year, the couple was assigned to Goose Bay, Labrador for a 15-month tour after which they settled in Topeka, Kansas.
Ed joined the Topeka law firm Cosgrove, Webb, and Oman in 1966 and was a practicing lawyer and partner for the last 45 years. He was the President of the Topeka Bar Association and a member of both the Kansas and American Bar Associations. One of Ed's greatest pleasures was writing, producing, and performing in The Topeka Bar Show every four years. Ed was forever gathering ideas and inspirations for his next Bar Show production. Well known for his wit and whip-smart sense of humor, Ed was also a wise, compassionate, and knowledgeable man.
He will be missed most of all by his adoring wife Sarah, his three children, Stewart, Matthew, and Leigh Bailey, daughter-in-law Jennifer Bailey, and brother Gary. Ed's four grandsons, Christopher, Jack, Alex, and Teddy, will forever cherish his memory.
A memorial ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, KS.
Memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Rd, Topeka, KS 66617 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
