Edward Richard Payne, 73, of Knoxville, Tennessee and Topeka, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2021.
He was born December 25, 1947, in Jonesboro, Tennessee, the son of Sydney Richard and Bonnie Elizabeth (Archer) Payne.
Edward worked in trim carpentry and was a musician. He enjoyed playing his guitar and performing at the Grand Ole Opry. During his musical career he performed with George Jones, Jean Shepherd and several other famous people. Most of all Edward loved spending time with his family and friends. His most recent endeavor was farming and he had recently purchased himself a tractor.
Edward was a member of the American Legion. He served in the United States Army and was active during the Vietnam War working in Artillery and experienced illnesses throughout his life related to Agent Orange.
Survivors include his wife, Denise Payne; a daughter, Karen Bates; his nieces, Elizabeth Perry and Jennifer Okkerse; a nephew, Brent Payne; his father-in-law, Bob Holmes and mother-in-law, Lois Holmes; his sisters-in-law, Debbie (Richard) Dreher, Sheri (Jim) Higdon and a brother-in-law, Dennis Holmes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bill Payne and sister, Shirley Carr.
Honoring Edward's request, cremation is planned. A visitation will take place from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the Dove Cremations and Funerals – Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka, KS 66610.
