Lt. Col. Elbridge "Jiggs" Bell, (Ret.)
Elbridge "Jiggs" Bell, 83, of Topeka passed away, Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Bell served in the U.S. Air Force 31 years, retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1973. He was a decorated veteran of WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Lt. Col. Bell was a command pilot and civil engineer serving tours in Germany, Morocco, and Vietnam with the Strategic Air Command and Military Air Lift Command. After retirement Mr. Bell managed the Caravan Club and also owned and operated the Chatterbox Tavern in east Topeka.
Mr. Bell was married to Evelyn "Laly" Chipman 61 years. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Barry (Charlotte) Bell, Shawnee, KS; Howard (Sandy) Bell, San Jose, CA; four grandchildren, Zoey and Dylan Bell and Steven and Lori Voelkel.
Mr. Bell will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel where the family will greet friends from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with burial to follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
