Elizabeth "Bessie" Allen, 96, of Brentwood, California died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at home.
Mrs. Allen was born on September 8, 1907 in Elk City, Montgomery Co., Kansas to Edwin B.
and Armina I. Megonigle Haines. She attended school in Montgomery Co. until the family
moved to Maple Hill, Ks., where she attended elementary and high school. Her first employment
was that as switchboard operator for the Wakarusa Central Office, owned by Mr. & Mrs. Frank
Pratt. Later Elizabeth married Walter D. Allen on February 21, 1928. He passed away on
October 14, 1988. Elizabeth and Walter moved to Richland and lived there until 1956 when they
moved to Berryton. In 1961 they moved to Lawrence where Elizabeth lived in the home until
2000, when she moved to Brandon Woods Retirement Community. In June, 2002 she moved to
Brentwood, CA. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, brother Bertru and sister Eva
Bell. Survivors include her sister, Glenola Hamaker, Osage City. She also is survived by three
children, Betty I. Phillips, Brentwood, CA; Wayne D. (Julie) Allen, San Jose, CA; and Judith E.
(Robert) Prestridge, Hot Springs Village, AR; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and
much loved nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-
Gabel Highland Chapel. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery southeast of Topeka. Mrs.
Allen will lie in state during visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel
Highland Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Sutter VNA &
Hospice c/o Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel, 2843 S.E. Minnesota Ave., Topeka, Ks. 66605.
