Elsie M. McCann, 91, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013 at a Topeka care facility. She was born November 18, 1921 in Maple Hill, the daughter of Fergus G. and Ethel G. Knapp Barbarow.
She graduated from Topeka High School in 1939 and attended Strickler's Business College before becoming a secretary for the federal government in Washington, D.C. After working for private industry in San Diego, CA, she retired from the Kansas Department of Transportation in 1985. Elsie was a member of the First Christian Disciples of Christ Church and was active in CWF activities and other church functions. She was also a member of Helena Chapter No. 210, Order of the Eastern Star. She also enjoyed bowling with several senior bowling leagues.
Elsie married Robert Hines in 1941. They later divorced. Elsie married John McCann on April 6, 1946 in Hollywood, CA. They were married 67 years. He survives. Other survivors include her daughter, Joan M. Borden of Temecula, CA and twin granddaughters, Denise R. Slate of Escondido, CA and Darleen S. Borden of Bakersfield, CA.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Disciples of Christ Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Elsie will lie in state from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel.
