Emory Bond, Jr.

Emory Bond, Jr, 92 of Topeka, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Brewster Place Health Center. He was born March 2, 1917 in Auburn, KS to Emery and Lulu (Bullock) Bond and graduated from Burlingame, KS High School. He was a Civil Engineering graduate of Kansas State University and a licensed Professional Engineer. He did aircraft parts design work for McDonnell Douglas during World War II and served in the United States Army Air Corps at the end of the war. He did the structural design work on the only two buildings on the Washburn Campus to sustain no structural damage in the 1966 tornado, Morgan and Stauffer Halls, and also did the structural design work on the current Seaman High School. His primary design work for much of his career was bridges and highways. During his early professional years he worked for the Kansas Highway Department and VanDoren and Hazard Professional Engineers. As a supervisor in the Bridge Design Department of VanDoren and Hazard, he was heavily involved in the design of many of the bridges you see on the Turnpike between here and Kansas City. He later was self-employed with Ellis and Bond Professional Engineers, and Emory Bond and Associates Consulting Engineers until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Gladys (Stone) in 1991 and by an infant daughter, Marilyn Bond. He married Donna (Williams) Bond in 1996 and she survives at the home. He is also survived by his two sons Duane (Terri) Bond, and Gary (Nancy) Bond of Topeka, a step-son Bill (Helga) Williams, Westminster, Colorado, a brother Jay Bond of Topeka, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 37th and Wanamaker, Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Rochester Cemetery. Mr. Bond will lie in state from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
