Erma I. Rust, 90, of Topeka, passed away May 20, 2014. She was born on July 7, 1923 in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Frank S. and Stella (Davis) Ralston. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the bees swarmed.
Erma met Howard Rust at a football game in October of 1940, and they were married in 1943. There were war years, a bittersweet time, where you learned to treasure each day as though it was your last. They were married 64 years.
The Rusts spent 28 years in the Air Force, where Rusty was a pilot and a career officer. Erma loved the Air Force, and the many friends they made.
Erma and Rusty were blessed with three daughters, Dian Kress, of Mayetta, Kansas, Suzan Hanamann, of Shawano, Wisconsin, and Bonnie Sartain, of Palm Desert, California. She was doubly blessed with thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Erma was preceded in death by her husband, Rusty; her parents; a brother, Sam, and sister, Alma.
Since Erma was the last of her family, she is joyfully reunited with them today.
Erma was a member of Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church and The Sam Maverick Chapter of the DAR. Her favorite Scripture was St. John 14: 1-4, 12-16, 26 (King James Version only); and her favorite Hymn was "Because He Lives".
A family celebration of Erma's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142 , or the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
