Ernest S. Bud Horton, 83, Topeka, died January 11, 2007 at his home. He was born May 18, 1923, in Portland, Oregon to Halbert G. Horton and Lura E. Horton. Bud came to Topeka in 1929 along with his older brother and sister, Hal and Betty, who preceded him in death. Bud attended schools in Topeka and elsewhere and graduated from Manhattan High School, class of 1942. In January 1943, Bud joined the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, 1st Allied Army, during World War II. While in England he met and married the love of his life Margaret U.A. Todd. They were married Sept. 28, 1944 in Nottingham, England. They were married over 59 years until her death May 31, 2004. After the war, Bud went to work as a pressman for Burge Printing Co. He has worked as a pressman for J.M. Hart Co. and later Standard-Hart Printing until retirement in 1987. In retirement he worked as a printing instructor at Kansas Correctional Vocational Training Center and later did printing part time for Grand Lodge State of Kansas AF and AM Masons. Bud fully retired in 2000. While his sons were growing up, Bud was active with Jayhawk Area Council Boy Scouts of America. He served in numerous capacities including Scout Master of Troop 20 and Troop 118. He also served as a Neighborhood Commissioner for several years and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Bud was a member of American Legion Capital Post No. 1 and played trumpet in the Drum and Bugle Corp. He joined the Topeka Club of the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen in 1953 and served in all offices including President 1972-1973. He served in the Eighth District of the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen as Auxiliary Governor and Governor. He was the first member of the Topeka Club to be elected President of the Eighth District. He was a VFW member and Mason, Wakarusa Lodge # 402. Bud was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his parents, brother, sister, and a daughter, Jill Colin. Survivors include son Robert Alexander and his wife, Nancy Pauletto Horton, Topeka, Steven Roger and his wife Michele Clarice Horton, both of Topeka, and Gillian Margaret Elizabeth Horton, Heronsgate, England; five grandchildren, Wende Caroline Horton, Emily Dawn and her husband, Avery Moore, Baltimore, MD; Robyn Lura Horton, Megan Elise Horton and Allison Michele Elizabeth Horton, all of Topeka; and six great- grandchildren, Richard Alexander White, Samuel Charles and Miles Alexander Moore, Kristopher Tyriq Horton-Wallace, Caleb Marcus and Tobias Steven Patrick Horton. Mr. Horton was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, January 27, 2007 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, St. Marys Chapel. Inurement will be in the Chapel of the Resurrection Columbarium. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 SE Eighth Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603-3219.
