Esther Draper May died on January 4, 2018, just one week short of her 97th birthday, in her home at Brewster Place.
She was born in Atchison, Kansas, January 11, 1921, to Floyd Draper and Nancy Pitts Draper.
Esther attended Boswell Junior High and graduated from Topeka High in 1939. She married Linden May at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Topeka, on August 28, 1949.
She was a homemaker while her two sons were growing up, then was employed by the State of Kansas, Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, retiring in 1982.
Esther and Linden taught their sons, through example, to honor and respect all members of our diverse society, and that economic justice will be achieved through the strength of unions and collective bargaining.
She and Linden enjoyed traveling, attending art classes and art shows throughout the United States. She was an accomplished artist; her works having been shown and sold in galleries in Taos, New Mexico; Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; and Charlottesville, West Virginia. Her works are included in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Canada.
Esther was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, in Topeka, a signature member of the Kansas Watercolor Society, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railroad Employees, Santa Fe Railroad Retirees Club, and a member and past president of the Topeka branch of the National League of American Pen Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years and a sister, Marybelle Bass.
She is survived by two sons; Brad (Andee) of Missoula, Montana, and John; and daughter-in-law Debbie May of Topeka; three grandsons; John Michael May (Rhonda), Todd May (Nicole) of Topeka, and Darwin May, of Chandler, AZ; and a step-grandson Jared Hothan (Cristi), of Newton, Kansas; and five great-grandchildren.
A private inurnment ceremony for family will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mausoleum and Reception Center. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 Fillmore.
