Etta M. Schafer

Etta M. Schafer, 94, Topeka, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 at Midland Hospice House.

Etta was born September 10, 1918 in Topeka, the daughter of Harry T. and Carrie C. (Nitz) Shepard.

She graduated from Highland Park High School and attended Clarks Business School in Topeka.

She was employed in Civil Service, Department of the Air Force at the Forbes Depot for many years, retiring as Transportation manager in 1967. She was instrumental in installing the Atlas Missiles in Kansas.

She was an active member of First Assembly of God Church where she held a bible study weekly and was on the prayer team. She and several other ladies started the first Women's Aglow Fellowship in Topeka. She was the President of the Topeka chapter for several years and also served as the Regional Director and Prayer Coordinator for the State of Kansas. She was involved in a Prison Ministry for over 27 years, with Women's Aglow Fellowship and Hidden Treasures.

Etta married Ben E. Schafer on September 19, 1940 in Topeka. He died December 23, 1994. Etta and Ben had one son, Larry Schafer. Larry preceded her in death on October 5, 2011. Survivors include daughter-in-law, Diane Schafer, Topeka; grandchildren, Tammy (Jim) Demaree, Salina, Larry (Joy) Schafer, Jr., St. Peters, MO, Ben Schafer, Topeka; and great-granddaughters, Grace, Olivia, Cate, Claire, Chloe, Peyton; niece, Judy (Darold) Davis; and nephew, Deane D. Shepard, II, all of Kansas City, MO; two great nieces; one great nephew; and five great-great nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Deane Shepard, Sr.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Etta will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
