Eugene Mack Percy, 87, of rural Douglas County, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at his home. He was born November 11, 1923 in Carlyle, KS, the son of Mack J. and Pearl P. Latimer Percy. He graduated from Iola High School in 1942. He was an Army veteran of WWII.
Eugene earned a BA degree in music from Washburn University in 1950, a MS degree from Emporia State Teachers College in 1961 and a Doctorate in Education from Kansas University in 1973. He was an educator, with his career spanning from 1950-1981. He was a member of the Christian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 65 years.
Eugene married Ramona Z. Riepen on May 9, 1947 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include their children; Ianthe (Pat) Wozniak of Garden City, MO, Rebecca Percy of Lawrence, Melissa (Stan) Drumm of Spokane, WA, Patricia (George) Ferguson of Kansas City, KS, Renetta Jean (Brad) Dawson of Hays, KS, 7 grandchildren; Jami, Andy, Brian, Meranda, Peggy, Annie and Jack, 15 great-grandchildren and his 4 brothers; Robert, Oscar, Wm Glenn and Claude. Eugene was preceded in death by his brother, Carl.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where military honors will be presented by a burial detail from Fort Riley. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place in Highland Cemetery in Iola at a later date.
