Eugene Worthington

Eugene "Gene" Worthington, 84, of Tecumseh, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Topeka Homestead Assisted Living. He was born November 30, 1930 in Douglas Co., Kansas, the son of Charles and Rosa (Grindol) Worthington.

Eugene graduated from Berryton High School in 1948 and was an Air Force Veteran during the Korean War. He was a farmer and stockman until 1979 when he traded his jeans for a suit and went to work for Laird Noller Ford where he retired in 1999.

He was a charter member of the Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church. He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed coaching youth baseball, men's softball and was a basketball referee for many years. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Eugene married Phyllis Jean Woodward on June 3, 1956 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Mike (Debbie) Worthington of Tecumseh, Cathy (Don) Shrewsbury of Tecumseh, Patti Swenson of Olathe, five grandchildren, Trevor, Jessica, Jaime, Casey and Paige and three great-grandchildren, Phoenix, Calyn and Brandt. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Art, Maxine, Leonard and Ted.

Cremation has taken place and private inurnment will take place in Pleasant Hill Cemetery southeast of Topeka at a later date. The family will receive friends and celebrate Eugene's life from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Reynolds Lodge at Lake Shawnee.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St., Ste. 100, Topeka, KS 66614 or to Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, 6020 SE 44th St., Tecumseh, KS 66542.
