Evelyn Pollock Herold, 84, of Topeka, passed away Friday, July 5, 2024.
She was born January 7, 1940, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Reverend William Montgomery and Mary (Pollock) Nichol. She was a graduate of Clifton Heights High School (Pennsylvania) and Sterling College (Kansas).
Evelyn had a passion for teaching small children. She attained her teaching degree in May of 1962. She started teaching 3rd grade at Whitson Elementary in Topeka, KS for four years. After her family grew older, she started working for Shawnee County Parks & Recreation working with the Creative Play Preschool program for over 30 years teaching at community center locations in Oakland, Hillcrest and Gage Park.
Evelyn married John J. Herold on June 25th, 1966 in Topeka, Kansas. He survives in Topeka. Other survivors include her four children, Sherman(Nadine) Herold of Ozawkie, KS, Martin(Mary) Herold of Tecumseh, KS, Leonard(Janet) Herold of Oskaloosa, KS and David Herold of Topeka; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Grace Nichol of Media, PA; and her brother, Paul(Anne) Nichol of Shrewsbury, PA.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Nichol.
Evelyn enjoyed singing alto and playing the piano in her younger years, and also loved watching Jayhawk basketball and westerns with her husband. She was a member of a local antique club along with the Lincoln Club of Topeka. She never had a tough time chatting or socializing; enjoyed traveling to reunions throughout the United States, along with visiting and spending time with family and friends.
Honoring her request, cremation is planned. To celebrate her life the family will host an open house from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at The Red Barn, 4834 SE 37th, Tecumseh, Kansas.
