Fern Alouise (Thompson) Hubbard was born in Aulne, Kansas on March 29, 1924, the youngest of 3 daughters. Her parents were Artie and Chester Thompson.
After her mother died, Fern was raised by her Aunt Anna and Uncle Joe Daniels in Nowata Oklahoma, where she attended elementary and high school.
After graduating, Fern married her childhood sweetheart, Robert A. Hubbard. Robert and Fern were married for 59 years. Fern learned to cook from Aunt Annie. She began sewing in her teens and started a career as a seamstress after her marriage. Fern was an extraordinary seamstress and very creative. She passed this attribute on to her children. After the birth of 2 children, the couple moved to Coffeyville, Kansas. Fern honed her homemaking skills sewing clothes for her children, planting a garden and canning vegetables. After WWII (Robert served in the Navy) 4 more Children were born. Fern's life changed when Robert contracted Tuberculosis. She began work at Straussberg's Clothing Store while raising 6 children on her own. Robert was in hospital for 4 years before finishing college and an internship in Joplin, MO. During that time Fern taught her all kids to sew, cook and to be creative. The family moved to Cape Girardeau, Mo. in 1960 when Robert accepted a job as Medical Technician at St. Francis Hospital, In Cape, Fern worked at Al's 234 Shops (Oglander's) Clothing Store doing alterations. Later she worked at Rust and Martin's Furniture store making drapes, upholstery, bed spreads, pillows - you name it! She also active in her church, UPC, the Extension Club, the NAACP, etc.. After retirement, Fern began quilting, learned doll repair, made doll clothes for the Salvation Army Christmas drive, worked the polls on voting days and traveled with Robert, In 1996, they moved to Topeka, KS to be near the families of 2 of their children. Fern continued quilting, crotcheting, making doll clothes and doing alterations and inviting those she met to church.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Parker and Virginia Steemer. Her beloved husband Robert Alphonso. Three sons, Robert Anthony, Paul Edward, Albert Clifford and one daughter, Vertle Alouise.
She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Ann and Jocelyn McGree (Topeka). Six grandsons, 3 granddaughters, six great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Inurnment will take place at Leavenworth National Cemetery on Monday, August 31, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.
