Florence Brown

Florence Irene Brown passed on to our Lord on May 14, 2009 at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Facility in Lawrence, Kansas with her family at her side.

She was born near Burlingame, Kansas, June 30, 1910, to Charles and Winifred Guile who later homesteaded near Miller, Kansas. Florence enjoyed riding the Santa Fe Trail on her horse, Foxy, many times. She graduated from Miller High School in 1919. She attended the College of Emporia, Emporia, Kansas.

She is survived by one sister, Winifred Clayton, Wichita, Kansas, daughter Phyllis Hobbs (Doran) Green Valley, Arizona. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Lee Queen (Lori) Lawrence, Kansas, Kenny Hunte, Idaho; Lisa Hunte, Heidi Hunte, Silver City, New Mexico: Wendy Carreon, (Angel) El Paso, Texas: Robin Christenson (Roy) Farmington, New Mexico; Delores Heinen (Scott) Valley Falls, Kansas; Robert Hobbs (Susan) Liberty, Kansas; one niece, Cheryl McMillan, Wichita, Kansas and on nephew, Bill Guile (Anna Mae) Oregon. Also she is survived by 19 great grand children and two great-great grand daughter.

She was proceeded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Glenn Brown; one daughter, Carol Hunte: one grandson, Jess Queen and one great grandson Benjamin Carreon, 4 brothers and two sisters.

Florence loved nothing more than her family and never forgot a birthday, a special occasion, a book for Christmas and good advise for all. She loved to entertain and did so with perfection. She and her husband traveled to many foreign countries after their retirements and never forgot to send individual cards to all of her family members and wrote a story of their travels upon their return which she sent to all the family members.

Florence worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Haskell Indian Junior College and later for the Department of Indian Public Health for many years in Albuquerque where she and her husband lived for 40 years. She was very active in the Methodist Church where she was the chair person for the wedding reception committee for several years. She and her helpers would dress in formal dresses and serve the reception in an impeccable manner. She was very active as a volunteer in the "Thrift Shop." She was the State Representative for Job's Daughters for the state of New Mexico for several years and loved visiting the girls and admiring their progress.

She is a member of the Lew Wallace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and has been since 1975. She loved history and researched her patriot's line even going to London to look up his ships passage.

She loved to quilt and made one for each of her children and most of the grandchildren. She was a fantastic cook and people were always wanting her recipes which she eagerly gave.

This mom was truly a gentle lady. She never complained and always said "thank you, love" to everyone that did something for her. Even though she has been deaf for about four years she responded to writings and could discuss anything. She was an avid reader and was always up to date on current events.

We will always remember her dedication to her family and friends and remember all that she taught us. She will be missed by all and we know that she is with her beloved husband in God's heaven. We all love you, Mother, very much, and we miss you but we know we will see you someday. God's speed to you.

At her request there will be no service. After cremation Florence will join her husband at the Santa Fe Military Cemetery, Santa Fe New Mexico.
