Frances I. deLain, 94, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at her home. She was born November 15, 1919 in Lyndon, KS, the daughter of Virgil and Florence Anderson Smith.
She graduated from Overbrook High School in 1939. Frances was employed by Pauline East Grade School in food service and later went to work for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of Terra Heights Baptist where she served as the church treasurer for many years.
Frances married Paul O. deLain. They later divorced in 1962. Survivors include two daughters, Carol A. (Tom) Horton and Diane deLain both of Topeka, one grandson, great-grandson, four brothers, Ralph Smith, Virgil "Junior" Smith, Albert Smith and Hayden Smith and two sisters, Elsie Anderson and Alice Schneider. Frances was preceded in death by her two sons, John deLain, Charles deLain and one daughter, Marilyn Fire.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at Terra Heights Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery southeast of Topeka. As per Frances's wishes, she will not lie in state. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Capper Foundation, 3500 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604 or to Terra Heights Baptist Church, 232 SE Sanneman Dr., Topeka, KS 66609. Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel is assisting the family.
