Fred Tenbrink, 84, Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at his home.
Fred was born January 19, 1925 in Alma, the son of Ben and Emma (Horstman) Tenbrink. He was the fifth of seven children. His father passed away at an early age and his mother raised their family on a farm outside Alma on Kuenzli Creek.
He served in the Merchant Marines and later in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Fred worked as a Teamster for Freightways, Wilson, and Interstate Trucking for many years, retiring in 1985.
He was active in PTA at Sumner School, coaching Baseball in the Cosmo league, and served as a Boy Scout leader. He had a love for the Flint Hills and raising cattle.
Fred married Lola Holenbeck on November 27, 1949 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1997. Survivors include sons, Jerry (Beryl) Tenbrink, Topeka, Mike (Laurie) Tenbrink, Burlingame, Tom (Joyce) Tenbrink, Topeka; daughter, Cindy Bishop, Overland Park; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Bill Tenbrink, Wakarusa, and a sister-in-law Beulah Tenbrink, Berryton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Burial will follow at noon at the Alma City Cemetery. Fred will lie in state at the funeral home after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
